Welcome

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce you to the work of Chabad and outline the ways it serves the Princeton University Community.

By way of background, Chabad is a Chasidic ideology.  The name Chabad is a Hebrew acronym for the three intellectual faculties of: Chachmah-wisdom, Binah-comprehension and Da'at-knowledge. The Chabad philosophy encourages individuals to understand and recognize the importance and unique mission of each creature, and to refine and govern their every act and feeling through wisdom, comprehension and knowledge.  We encourage all Jews to follow Judaism according to Halacha (Jewish Law), yet we recognize every Jew as fully Jewish irrespective of his or her personal level of observance.

Through the work and dedication of Rabbi Eitan and Gitty Webb, Chabad has had an active presence in the Princeton University community since November 2002, providing students with new opportunities to experience Judaism imbued with the vibrancy, intellectual depth, and vitality of Chassidic thought.  In the 2005-06 academic year alone, Chabad attracted hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students to its regular programming.  A few statistics are telling.  During the High Holiday season Chabad welcomed over 100 students.  Chabad hosted 23 students at its annual family style Passover Seder.  Chabad provided Passover Matzoh and other provisions to over 200 students. Chabad provided Jewish prayer books to 110 seniors.  On an average Friday night Chabad hosts 15-30 students for Shabbat dinner.  And Chabad has an active alumni network of almost 100 Princetonians.  These sheer numbers not only underscore Chabad’s organic success and grassroots support, they highlight the basic fact that Chabad is filling a previously unmet need on Princeton’s campus.
